한국생산기술연구원(원장 이상목) 기능성소재부품그룹 박형기·나태욱 수석연구원 공동 연구팀이 수소저장합금 원천 성분계를 개발하고 개발된 소재를 활용해 고체수소 저장 모듈을 제조하는 데 성공했다.
수소저장합금은 수소를 흡수해 고체 상태로 저장할 수 있는 소재로 시스템 기준 1㎥ 당 약 50㎏의 수소 저장이 가능한 부피저장밀도를 갖고 있다.

연구팀은 수소저장합금의 수소 흡·방출 압력을 사용처에 따라 정밀하게 제어하는 방식으로 최적의 합금 성분계를 설계하는 플랫폼 기술을 개발했다.
이를 통해 설계된 합금은 10기압 이하의 저압에서도 별도의 압축이나 냉각 없이 상온에서 수소를 저장할 수 있다.
